Police misconduct occurs when law enforcement officers
exceed their lawful authority, causing injuries, death or violations of rights. Police misconduct cases can arise from officers’ use of excessive force with police weapons (such as batons, tasers, dogs, less than lethal munitions, and handcuffing), control holds, and firearms. Cases can also arise from wrongful seizures, searches, and arrests.
Law enforcement officers are given awesome powers to restrict liberty and even injure or take a life in certain circumstances. We respect those officers who serve the community with fairness and professionalism, but will continue to hold accountable those officers who abuse their power to injure or unlawfully violate the rights of others.
Exercise your rights
You have the right to remain silent! You are required to provide identifying information, but do not have to say anything outside of this. REMAIN SILENT. The police can lie to you, and often do in order to obtain incriminating statements from you. REMAIN SILENT. Advise the police you wish to make no statements without an attorney present.
The police cannot search your property without your consent, unless they have a search warrant or exigent circumstances. You do NOT have to give consent. If the police have a search warrant or exigent circumstances, you have no choice. Remain respectful, but DO NOT GIVE CONSENT.
